ABOUT ME
Designing experiences that solve real problems
I spent eight years in financial accounting before I touched a design tool. That's not a fun-fact, it's the reason I work the way I do. I don't start with a screen, I start by figuring out whether the problem being described is the actual problem. Most of the time it isn't, and that gap is where the real work happens.
I'm suspicious of solutions that show up before the diagnosis does. If a stakeholder hands me a feature request, my first question isn't how to build it, it's what's actually breaking underneath it that made someone ask for this specific fix. That habit slows the first week down and saves the next six.
I'd rather understate something true than overstate something impressive. I edit my own writing the way I edit interfaces, cutting anything that sounds good but doesn't hold up under a direct question. If a number or a claim can't survive someone asking "how do you know that," it doesn't go in.
Outside of work
A few magical places and adventures I've experienced: The Treasury at Petra, carved into rock in the middle of the Jordanian desert. Volcán de Fuego, an active stratovolcano I backpacked to in Guatemala. A dog sled team I rode with across the Mongolian steppe. Elephants I fed and bathed at a sanctuary in Thailand. Most recently, a 15-mile hike in Patagonia that ended at Fitz Roy.
Closer to home, you'll usually find me at a coffee shop: laptop open, cold brew or pour-over in hand, kouign amann on the plate if it's on the menu, people-watching in the gaps between working.
Lately I've been deep into charcuterie boards, not just plating meat and cheese, but the actual composition: where the prosciutto rose sits, how the cheese fan balances against the fruit, what makes people reach for a plate before I've even said it's ready.
